Bedtime Stories

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bedtime Stories was released on 24 October 1994 as Madonna's sixth album. After all the fuss over Erotica, her book Sex and two films, she wanted to tone down the sexual theme and opted for R&B. She began with Shep Pettibone, but stopped when the demos came to resemble Erotica too much. She then worked with well-known producers: Dallas Austin, Babyface, Dave Hall and Nellee Hooper. It was the first time since her second album that she had worked this way.

Instead of lust, the songs are about romance, heartbreak, longing and regret. With Babyface she wrote Take a Bow and Forbidden Love, in his studio in Beverly Hills. Take a Bow spent seven weeks at the top of the American chart, her longest number 1. Critics appreciated the softer sound, others found it less striking than earlier work. Later the record is often seen as one of her best and most underrated. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Take a Bow, a ballad by Madonna and Babyface, and notice how soft and direct the song sounds compared with the dance music of Erotica.
