Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy · This studio album from 1954 was made by Louis Armstrong and His All Stars and consists of songs by the blues composer W.C. Handy. George Avakian produced. In the band play Trummy Young on trombone, Barney Bigard on clarinet, Billy Kyle on piano, Arvell Shaw on bass and Barrett Deems on drums. The singer Velma Middleton sings on a number of tracks.
AllMusic calls the record the trumpeter's best of the 1950s and essential music for any serious jazz collection. The 1986 CD edition altered the album considerably, with different versions of many tracks. Only the 1997 reissue restored the original. It added a short interview of Handy himself by Avakian and rehearsal versions.
