Louis and the Angels
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Louis and the Angels is a studio album that was recorded on 29 and 30 January 1957 and released later that year by Decca. It is loosely a concept album: all the songs refer to angels. Sy Oliver wrote all the arrangements and conducted a choir and orchestra. Besides Armstrong we hear, among others, Lucky Thompson and Phil Urso on tenor saxophone and Billy Kyle on piano.
AllMusic calls the record obscure, but with a strange appeal. Armstrong plays a few good trumpet solos and sounds cheerful throughout the record. The album is more commercial than his usual recordings of the period, but according to the reviewer it sticks in the mind better than you would expect.
