The Rill Thing
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Rill Thing was released in August 1970 and was Little Richard's first album for Reprise Records. It was regarded as a comeback after three years without new records and after his acclaimed performance at the Atlantic City Pop Festival. He produced the record himself for the first time and put his own money into it. The arrangements lean on the soul and R&B of the time, with an emphasis on bass and guitar.
Freedom Blues reached the Billboard top 50, his biggest American hit in thirteen years. The album itself did not chart. The closing consists of two covers: Lovesick Blues and I Saw Her Standing There by the Beatles. The title track lasts well over ten minutes and is an instrumental jam. Rolling Stone called the record an artistic success on its release.
