The Mirror Pool

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Mirror Pool is Lisa Gerrard's first solo album and was released in 1995 by 4AD, a year before Spiritchaser, the last album that Dead Can Dance released before the band split up. The music dates from the years 1988 to 1995 and contains work that did not fit on her band's albums. It is largely orchestral and written for voice.

The singer described the title as a reference to African music, in which musicians were said to come into contact with spirits, and to a mirror in which the listener finds themselves reflected. She produced the record herself. The Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra plays on it. Persian Love Song is a traditional song from Shiraz, and Largo is the famous aria from Handel's opera Serse. La Bas, Celon and Gloradin were heard in the film Heat.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Largo and notice how a famous aria from an opera by Handel stands here among other work on this record.
