Hand Sown… Home Grown

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hand Sown… Home Grown · Linda Ronstadt had had success with the folk trio the Stone Poneys, who scored a top twenty single in 1967 with Different Drum. When the other two members left, she chose a solo career, and Capitol Records wanted to invest in it. Because the band's songs had always come from Bob Kimmel, she went back to the country music of her youth. The producer Chip Douglas, who had previously worked with The Monkees and The Turtles, helped her blend country and rock. She looked for musicians who could play Nashville songs with a Californian twist.

The album was released in March 1969 and was her first to carry her name alone. It includes covers of Bob Dylan, Randy Newman and John D. Loudermilk, and of Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line, which was rewritten for her as Only Mama That'll Walk the Line. Rolling Stone called it a distinctive approach to country as rock.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Only Mama That'll Walk the Line and notice the singer delivering a familiar country song from a female perspective. Can you hear how country and rock blend here?
