Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh · This studio album from 1955 brings together two saxophonists: Lee Konitz on alto and Warne Marsh on tenor. It was recorded on 14 June 1955 at Coastal Studios in New York, for Atlantic. The pianist Sal Mosca plays on most of the tracks, Ronnie Ball on one. The guitarist Billy Bauer, the bassist Oscar Pettiford and the drummer Kenny Clarke are also heard. Nesuhi Ertegun was the producer.

Billboard found the album remarkable for its excellent modern playing and its successful use of old and new jazz sources. The Guardian wrote that the two saxophonists play without much emphasis and almost coolly, but that their melodic ingenuity is astonishing. BBC Music praised the graceful, intelligent and swinging playing. The Penguin Guide to Jazz counts the record among its core collection.
