Amabutho

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Amabutho is the first album by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the South African group that sings isicathamiya. It was released in 1973 by the Gallo Record Company. Seven men sing on the record, including Joseph Shabalala, Milton Mazibuko and Albert Mazibuko.

The album contains the hit Nomathemba. Amabutho became the first record by Black musicians in South Africa to receive a gold disc, for 25,000 copies sold. In 2007 Gallo reissued the record, in South Africa only, together with most of the group's early work. The titles are Zulu: Amabutho means warriors and Nomathemba means hope.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nomathemba and notice how the voices of the seven men together form a whole.
