Winter Was Hard

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Winter Was Hard presents the Kronos Quartet with a wide choice of music: pieces by Aulis Sallinen, Terry Riley, Arvo Pärt, Anton Webern, John Zorn, John Lurie, Astor Piazzolla, Alfred Schnittke and Samuel Barber. The quartet consists of David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt and Joan Jeanrenaud. Most of the recordings date from November 1987 in Methuen, Massachusetts. The title piece was recorded in January 1988 in a church in San Francisco, with the San Francisco Girls Chorus and a harmonium.

Forbidden Fruit was produced by Zorn, with turntables by Christian Marclay and the voice of Ohta Hiromi. The album placed 11th in the Los Angeles Times Classical Top 25 of 1989. Brian Olewnick calls it a typical early mixture of contemporary music with a downtown edge and twentieth-century classics.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Forbidden Fruit to the turntables of Christian Marclay and the voice of Ohta Hiromi: how does that sound on an album of string quartet music?
