KISS

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

KISS · The debut by Kiss was released on 8 February 1974 by Casablanca Records. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had already written many of the songs for their previous band Wicked Lester. The recording took place at Bell Sound Studios in New York and, according to the producer Richie Wise, lasted only thirteen days. The music is solid, direct rock, with Strutter as the opener, kicked off by a drum intro. Cold Gin was the first song that Ace Frehley wrote for the band; because he did not dare to sing, Simmons took over the vocals. Nothin' to Lose became the first single. Kissin' Time was not on the first pressing and was recorded two months later, when it became clear that the record was not achieving the hoped-for success.

At the presentation the show became so bombastic that Warner Bros. threatened to end the collaboration unless the face paint disappeared. The band refused.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Strutter and notice how the song opens with a drum intro: can you hear how the band then launches straight into full swing?
