Hotter Than Hell
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hotter Than Hell · For their second album, the four New Yorkers went to Los Angeles in 1974, where the producers Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise had just moved. It was the first time the band had recorded outside their home state, and they did not feel at home there. On the first day, Paul Stanley's guitar was stolen. The album sounds darker than the debut, because of the muddy production and the lyrics. Goin' Blind is about a doomed love between a man of 93 and a girl of 16, and Watchin' You about a stalking voyeur. Ace Frehley co-wrote but did not yet dare to sing. His solo in Strange Ways is considered one of his best.
The album did far worse than the debut. There was no hit, and the only single was released in small numbers. Even so, Parasite, Hotter Than Hell and Watchin' You remained staples on stage.
