Youth & Young Manhood · With this debut from 2003, Kings of Leon introduced themselves to a wider audience. The album was released in July 2003 in the United Kingdom and in August in the United States. It was recorded in three studios: Shangri-La in Malibu, Sound City in Van Nuys and Ocean Way in Nashville.

The music is southern rock with influences from punk and garage rock. Molly's Chambers, Wasted Time and California Waiting were released as singles. Red Morning Light was a promotional single and turned up in a commercial for the Ford Focus and in the game FIFA 2004. Holy Roller Novocaine later ended up in a film. The critics responded generally positively: NME counted the album among the best debuts of the decade and The Village Voice called it the best rock debut of 2003. In the United Kingdom it reached number 3. In the United States it did not make the top hundred.
