Jazz Contemporary

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Jazz Contemporary is an album by the American jazz trumpeter Kenny Dorham, recorded on 11 and 12 February 1960 and released on the Time label. It is the first recording by the pianist Steve Kuhn. The other musicians are the baritone saxophonist Charles Davis, the bassist Jimmy Garrison or Butch Warren, and the drummer Buddy Enlow. The programme consists of originals by the leader, along with Monk's Mood by Thelonious Monk, In Your Own Sweet Way by Dave Brubeck and This Love of Mine, which Frank Sinatra co-wrote.

The AllMusic reviewer gave the album two and a half stars. In his view it is not truly essential, but everyone plays well. He calls it fine hard bop, the modern mainstream of the time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Monk's Mood, a composition by Thelonious Monk, and notice how the band turns it into a relaxed hard bop piece.
