Pieces of Time
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Pieces of Time is an album by four jazz drummers: Kenny Clarke, Andrew Cyrille, Milford Graves and Famoudou Don Moye. Cyrille set the project in motion. They recorded it in September 1983 in New York; it was released in 1984 on the Soul Note label. Each drummer contributed compositions, and in addition each played a personal two-minute statement.
Max Roach wrote the liner notes and called the idea of four percussionists taking sound as their starting point a purely artistic design. The Penguin Guide to Jazz wrote that Clarke, the eldest of the group, almost stole the show. Robert Palmer remarked in The New York Times that Clarke had never stopped listening to younger players. The reviews also praised the coherence of the group pieces.
