GNX

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Kendrick Lamar began this album just after 2022's Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, with producers Sounwave and Jack Antonoff. They recorded eighty to a hundred songs, of which twelve made the record. The title refers to the Buick Grand National Experimental, a car he had bought. GNX was released as a surprise on 22 November 2024, his first album after leaving Top Dawg Entertainment and Aftermath.

At just over 44 minutes it is his shortest studio album. The record is a tribute to his home city of Los Angeles, with plenty of G-funk. The Mexican singer Deyra Barrera sings on three tracks. Reincarnated uses the music of Tupac Shakur's Made Niggaz. Squabble Up and Luther reached the top of the Hot 100. Critics saw a successful new take on West Coast hip hop. The album won four Grammys, including Best Rap Album.
