The Kick Inside

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Kick Inside · Kate Bush had been writing songs since she was eleven and recorded demos with the help of her brothers. Through a friend, these reached David Gilmour of Pink Floyd in 1972. He was impressed, paid for better demos and played them to record executives. EMI signed her, with already about a hundred songs to her name. In July and August 1977 the rest of the record was recorded at AIR Studios in London, under producer Andrew Powell, with experienced session musicians.

Wuthering Heights was inspired by a 1967 television series, not by the novel itself. Bush insisted that this song be the first single, and it spent four weeks at the top of the British chart. The album reached third place in the United Kingdom and received praise both immediately and later.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Wuthering Heights and notice Bush's voice, which sounds remarkably high and expressive for a pop single.
