Never for Ever
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Never for Ever · After her 1979 tour Kate Bush began her third album, and for the first time she took charge of the production herself, together with Jon Kelly. She let go of arranger Andrew Powell, who had orchestrated the first two albums, because she wanted to make more choices of her own. As a result the album sounds more varied, from the rocker Violin to the wistful waltz Army Dreamers. Digital synthesizers and drum machines, such as the Fairlight CMI, were used for the first time.
The songs draw heavily on film and literature. The Infant Kiss is based on the film The Innocents and Delius (Song of Summer) on a television film by Ken Russell about the composer Delius. Blow Away is a tribute to her lighting director Bill Duffield, who was killed in an accident during a tour. The album was released in 1980 and reached number 1 in England, a first for a British female solo artist. Babooshka became one of her biggest hits. Critics were mostly positive.
