The Innocents
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Innocents is the third album by the English synth-pop duo Erasure, Vince Clarke and Andy Bell. It was released in April 1988 and produced by Stephen Hague. The record was the group's breakthrough: in the United Kingdom it became the first number 1 album in a long series for them, and in the United States heavy exposure on MTV produced two big hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
The album opens with four strong tracks in a row: A Little Respect, Ship of Fools, Phantom Bride and Chains of Love. They combine big melodies with the synthesizers for which the duo became known. According to the source, the album also became a beloved part of queer club music. The cover shows a stained-glass window from Chartres Cathedral. To date this is the duo's best-selling album, with an estimated five million copies worldwide.
