Andy Bell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Andy Bell is an English singer and songwriter, born in 1964 and raised in Peterborough. He learned to sing in the school choir and as a teenager listened to bands such as OMD and Japan. In 1985 he was selling women's shoes and singing in a small band, The Void. Then he answered an advertisement in the newspaper: Vince Clarke was looking for a singer. Clarke had already made Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The Assembly. Bell passed the audition and together they formed Erasure.

Music and breakthrough

In Erasure the two did what made the duo strong. Clarke built the electronic music, Bell gave it a face and a voice. His clear, emotional singing and his exuberant performances turned synth-pop into something warm and theatrical. The duo won, among other awards, a Brit Award for Best British Group. Bell was openly gay at a time when that was still far from a matter of course in the pop world, and became a role model for many fans.

Influence

From 2005 he also released solo albums, beginning with Electric Blue, with duets with Claudia Brücken and Jake Shears. Non-Stop (2010) followed, a series of theatre projects around the character Torsten, and Ten Crowns (2025). His voice remained tied to the danceable, melodic side of British electronic pop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sometimes by Erasure. Notice the acoustic guitar that plays along between the synthesizers, and how in the chorus Andy Bell reaches up high with great feeling.
