The Dreaming

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Dreaming · For her fourth album the singer decided to produce herself, after working with Jon Kelly on the previous one. She worked on the record for two years, mainly with the Fairlight, a sampler, and with several engineers, including Nick Launay. The first demo, for Sat in Your Lap, was made in September 1980 after a Stevie Wonder concert. The album was released on 13 September 1982 and sounds experimental, with mandolins, uilleann pipes and didgeridoos, changing time signatures and samples. The songs are about, among other things, old crime films, the war in Vietnam, the Aboriginals and Houdini.

The record entered the English chart at number three, but sold less than the earlier ones. The press called it uncommercial, and reactions were divided. In the decades that followed, appreciation rose sharply, and musicians such as Björk name the album as a favourite.
