Hounds of Love

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In the summer of 1983 Kate Bush began work on this album at home, with a LinnDrum, a Fairlight and a piano. Her previous record, The Dreaming, had sold poorly. After recording sessions in London and Ireland, and a year of overdubbing and mixing, Hounds of Love was finished in June 1985. The album came out on 16 September and consists of two parts. The first side contains the singles Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love, The Big Sky and Cloudbusting. The second side is called The Ninth Wave and tells, as a suite, of a woman drifting alone in the sea at night.

In the title track, lines from the horror film Night of the Demon are sampled. Running Up That Hill became her biggest hit. The album reached first place in England and received much praise. It is often counted among the best albums of all time and is her best-selling studio album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hounds of Love and notice at the beginning the spoken line from an old horror film, which is sampled here.
