Journey

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Journey is the band's debut album, released in April 1975 by Columbia Records. Unlike later records, it is mainly a progressive rock album in which the instrumental abilities of the musicians come first. It is the only album with rhythm guitarist George Tickner. The line-up otherwise consists of Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Neal Schon on lead guitar, Ross Valory on bass and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. Roy Halee produced.

Before the release the group had already recorded a demo album, with the same songs in a different order and with Prairie Prince on drums. There were more pieces, including instrumentals, that did not make the final record, such as Charge of the Light Brigade, the original title of that demo album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Of a Lifetime and notice how much room the instruments are given: the record is mainly about the playing of the musicians.
