Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter · Don Juan's Reckless Daughter was released on 13 December 1977 on Asylum Records. It is a double album, the ninth by Joni Mitchell. Her contract with the label was nearly up, and according to her she therefore made this record looser than anything she had done before. The sound goes still further into jazz than on her earlier albums. Jazz musicians play on it, including four members of Weather Report: Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Manolo Badrena and Alex Acuña.

Much of it is experimental. Overture opens with six guitars at once, some in different tunings. The Tenth World is a long instrumental composition with Latin percussion. Dreamland consists only of drums and voices, including Chaka Khan. Paprika Plains lasts sixteen minutes, with improvised piano and a full orchestra, and fills the whole second side. The reviews were mixed. Within three months the album was certified gold.

Listening

Listening tip. In Paprika Plains, listen to how the piano and the orchestra together tell a story that lasts sixteen minutes, and notice how the music moves along with the singing.
