Court and Spark
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Court and Spark · In 1973 Joni Mitchell, for the first time in her career, released no album. After For the Roses she wanted to set aside a whole year for a new record in which her growing interest in jazz would be audible. Together with engineer Henry Lewy she brought top musicians from Los Angeles into the studio, including members of the Crusaders and of Tom Scott's L.A. Express. Robbie Robertson, David Crosby and Graham Nash dropped by, and Cheech & Chong provided a touch of comedy.
The result combines folk rock with jazz elements. Help Me became her only top 10 single on the American Hot 100. The album was released in January 1974, was an immediate success and is still her best-selling. The Village Voice named it best album of the year.
