The Hissing of Summer Lawns

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Hissing of Summer Lawns · On this record from November 1975, Joni Mitchell pushes the smooth jazz-pop of Court and Spark in a more adventurous direction. Members of L.A. Express and the Crusaders play on it, with contributions from James Taylor, David Crosby and Graham Nash. For the first time she uses synthesizers and experiments with sampling. The lyrics deal with women's experiences of patriarchal norms, with suburban life and with the music industry.

The Jungle Line features a loop of the Drummers of Burundi, the first commercially released track with a sample. Without a big hit, the record still reached number four in the United States. Critics initially reacted dismissively and found the work weaker than its predecessor, but it grew into one of her most acclaimed albums.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Jungle Line and notice the rhythmic loop of the Drummers of Burundi, beneath which guitar, synthesizer and vocals are layered.
