USA Union

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

USA Union was released in 1970 on Polydor. The recording took place on 27 and 28 July of that year at Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles. John Mayall lived in Laurel Canyon in the late sixties and knew local musicians there. When his Turning Point band broke up, he had to form a new group quickly, because Polydor was asking for an album. He chose Harvey Mandel and Larry Taylor, who had just left Canned Heat, and violinist Don Sugarcane Harris.

The group worked without drums, as in the jazzy blues experiment of The Turning Point. He played guitar, piano and harmonica himself, Harris electric violin. Most of the songs are about his then love Nancy Throckmorton, who also took photographs for the cover. Nature's Disappearing, the opener, is about environmental problems. Leonard Feather wrote the liner notes.

Listening

Listening tip. In Nature's Disappearing, listen to what the lyrics are about: it is the only song that is not about love.
