Back to the Roots

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Back to the Roots is a double album from 1971 on Polydor. The recording took place in California and London. John Mayall invited former members of his band, including the guitarists Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor. Also playing are Harvey Mandel and Jerry McGee on guitar, Larry Taylor and Steven Thompson on bass, Keef Hartley and Paul Lagos on drums, Don Sugarcane Harris on violin and Johnny Almond on saxophone and flute. The bandleader sings himself and plays piano, harmonica and guitar. The USA Union line-up forms the core of the album.

In the late eighties he remixed a number of the tracks and released them together with older work as Archives to Eighties. An expanded CD version of Back to the Roots now contains both the original and the remixed tracks.
