Empty Rooms

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Empty Rooms was released in March 1970 on Polydor, as the follow-up to the live album The Turning Point, which had come out earlier that year. John Mayall played with the same musicians: Jon Mark on acoustic guitar, Johnny Almond on saxophones and flute and Stephen Thompson on bass. Mayall himself sang and played harmonica, guitars and keyboards, including a Moog synthesizer. There is no drummer, so the rhythm stays fluid and the sound is unusual, even for this bandleader. He wrote all the songs. They are mostly about his love for the photographer Nancy Throckmorton, to whom the record is dedicated.

On To a Princess, guest Larry Taylor, former bassist of Canned Heat, improvises a remarkable bass duet with Thompson. It is the only known studio record by this line-up, which broke up shortly after the recording. Taylor then joined Mayall's new band for USA Union.

Listening tip. Listen to To a Princess and follow how two basses complement each other and play with each other, without a drummer.
