John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band · After the break-up of the Beatles in April 1970, John Lennon underwent primal therapy with Yoko Ono under Arthur Janov, first for four weeks in London and then for four months in Los Angeles. In this therapy you relive old childhood pain. It gave him the material for this album. The recording took place in September and October 1970 at Abbey Road, with Ringo Starr on drums and Klaus Voormann on bass. Lennon, Ono and Phil Spector produced together.

The sound is raw and spare, the lyrics are deeply personal. Mother is about abandonment by his parents, Working Class Hero about the way young people are turned into soldiers. In God he lists, over a piano climax, things he does not believe in, from Jesus and Hitler to Beatles. On release the reactions were mixed. Later the album grew into one of his best solo records.

Listening

Listening tip. In God, listen to the list of things he does not believe in and to the ending, where he says he believes only in himself and Yoko.
