Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With the Lions

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With the Lions was released in May 1969 on Zapple, a sub-label of Apple. It is the second of three experimental albums that John Lennon made with Yoko Ono, after the controversial Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins. The series was meant to be an account of their life together.

The first side is a live recording from Cambridge of 2 March 1969: Ono screams and sings, Lennon plays loud, distorted guitar feedback. It was the first time a Beatle had performed without the rest of the band. The couple recorded the second side in their room at Queen Charlotte's Hospital in London. In No Bed for Beatle John they sing newspaper clippings about themselves. Baby's Heartbeat is a loop of the heartbeat of their unborn child, and Two Minutes Silence is silent, as a tribute to John Cage's 4'33".

Listening tip. Listen to Two Minutes Silence and notice what you hear when nothing is being played: the room, your own surroundings, your own expectation.
