Imagine

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Imagine · After the bare, small-scale setting of his first solo album, John Lennon opted for a richer sound in 1971. He recorded at his own Ascot Sound Studios, at EMI and at the Record Plant in New York, with Yoko Ono and Phil Spector as producers. His former Beatles colleague George Harrison, pianist Nicky Hopkins, bassist Klaus Voormann and drummers Alan White and Jim Keltner played on it. Later additions were strings and saxophone from King Curtis.

The title song is a plea for world peace and became his best-known song. How Do You Sleep? is an attack on Paul McCartney, written in a period of bad relations after the break-up of the Beatles. Oh My Love and How? come from his experiences with primal therapy. The album went to number one in the United States and the United Kingdom. According to AllMusic it is a beautiful collection of songs, even though it has less thematic range than its predecessor.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Jealous Guy and notice how the song is built around a simple melody. It originated as early as 1968 in India under the name Child of Nature.
