Soultrane
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Soultrane was released in 1958 on Prestige. John Coltrane recorded it at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, three days after a session for Miles Davis at Columbia. He plays tenor saxophone, with Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. None of the five tracks is his own.
The album shows his style of the late fifties, which the critic Ira Gitler called sheets of sound in the liner notes. It includes a long version of I Want to Talk About You, the Billy Eckstine ballad, which he would often play again later. Also on it are Good Bait by Tadd Dameron and Theme for Ernie. The album closes with an exceptionally fast version of Russian Lullaby. Producer Bob Weinstock related that he jokingly called the piece Rushin' Lullaby. The title comes from a 1956 album by Tadd Dameron.
