“But Seriously, Folks…”

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

“But Seriously, Folks…” · In mid-1978 But Seriously, Folks... was released on the Asylum label, the fourth studio album by the American singer and guitarist. He had by then been in the Eagles for two years, and all the other members of that band play on the record. You also hear keyboardist Jay Ferguson, drummer Joe Vitale from his former band Barnstorm and bassist Willie Weeks. Bill Szymczyk produced the album, which was recorded at Bayshore Studios in Florida.

The best-known song is the satirical Life's Been Good. The album version runs to well over eight minutes; for the single it was cut down to 4:35. It became his biggest solo hit. Critics were divided about the album as a whole: one thought most of the songs fell short, another called it his most considered and melodic record, a reflective song cycle.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Life's Been Good in the long album version. Notice how the satire unfolds over more than eight minutes and what the short single version must have left out.
