Barnstorm

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Barnstorm was released in October 1972 on ABC-Dunhill Records and is regarded as guitarist Joe Walsh's first solo album, although it was also the debut of the band Barnstorm. He had just left the James Gang. It was the first album to be recorded at Caribou Ranch in Colorado.

He largely left the hard rock of the James Gang behind for a more folk-like, acoustic sound, influenced by James Taylor and Crosby, Stills and Nash. He experimented with an ARP Odyssey synthesizer, slide guitar and a guitar run through a Leslie speaker for an organ-like tone. The only real hard rock track, Turn To Stone, became the best known. The album was only moderately successful on release but grew into a cult favourite. AllMusic called Birdcall Morning one of the most beautiful rock love songs of the early seventies.
