So What

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

At the end of 1974 So What was released on ABC-Dunhill Records, the third studio album by the American singer and multi-instrumentalist. He had put off its release for a long time, because after six or seven records he wanted to take a big step forward in singing, playing and maturity. Producer Bill Szymczyk worked on the result. On a few tracks Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner of the Eagles sing along, a good year and a half before he would join that band.

The album contains solid hard rock, such as Welcome To the Club and a new version of Turn To Stone, and more reflective songs such as Help Me Thru the Night. He wrote Song For Emma in memory of his young daughter, who had been killed in a car accident that spring. Later critics praised above all the guitar solos and the classic rock sound.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Song For Emma and remember that this track is a memory of his daughter, who had died. Notice how different the mood is from the hard rock of Welcome To the Club.
