House Party
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
House Party is the tenth studio album by the organist Jimmy Smith, recorded on 25 August 1957 and 25 February 1958 and released in 1958 on Blue Note. It was his fourteenth release for that label. In those years Blue Note used the Manhattan Towers Hotel Ballroom in New York for larger groups or when New York was more practical for the musicians. The engineer Rudy Van Gelder was still working in his parents' house in Hackensack at that time. House Party was the first of two Smith albums recorded on two different dates; the second was The Sermon!.
Those playing on the sessions included Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks and George Coleman on saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar and Art Blakey on drums. An AllMusic reviewer felt that the real pleasure lies in hearing the music itself.
