Damita Jo
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Damita Jo is Janet Jackson's eighth studio album and is named after her middle name. She began it in August 2002, after the All for You Tour, and worked on it until February 2004: eighteen months, the longest recording period of her career. Besides Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis she brought in new producers, including Babyface, Dallas Austin, Kanye West and Scott Storch. The album was released in March 2004, shortly after her Super Bowl performance in which her breast was accidentally exposed.
It is R&B, pop and hip hop about love, romance and lust. In it she plays with alter egos such as Damita Jo and Strawberry, and intimate interludes appear between the tracks. Critics praised the production but found the album too long and too sexual. The record industry blacklisted her singles, which dampened its success.
