Blue Trombone
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Blue Trombone was released in 1957 on Columbia Records. It is an early example of hard bop. The trombonist J.J. Johnson plays here with the pianist Tommy Flanagan, the bassist Paul Chambers and the drummer Max Roach.
Alongside Johnson's own pieces, such as Kev, Blue Trombone and 100 Proof, the quartet plays standards such as Hello Young Lovers, What's New and Gone With the Wind. The title piece is a single recording, but on the original LP it is split across two sides. The split falls exactly at the start of Chambers's bass solo. The album was later also released on CD, in 1994 on Tristar. Michael Nastos of AllMusic gave it four stars. According to him, the music shows why Johnson was regarded as the best jazz trombonist of bop and post-bop.
