Gone With the Wind
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In 1959 the Dave Brubeck Quartet wanted to make an album of their own music in unusual time signatures, which the group had come to know while travelling, for example in Turkish folk music. That became Time Out. The label's management, however, demanded that the band first make a more conventional record, to cover the risk. This is how Gone With the Wind came about, recorded on 22 and 23 April 1959 in Los Angeles.
It is a concept album paying tribute to the state of Georgia and the American South. Eugene Wright chose Ol' Man River and Joe Morello Short'nin' Bread. Paul Desmond chose The Lonesome Road and Basin Street Blues. Dave Brubeck took Georgia on My Mind and Swanee River. Critics called the album everything you would expect from Brubeck, and the most swinging the group had recorded up to that point. It was also seen as one of the weaker records by this classic line-up. Time Out later achieved the status of a milestone.
