Distance

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Distance is Hikaru Utada's third album and was released on 28 March 2001 on Toshiba EMI. It followed First Love, the best-selling record in Japanese music history. The songs were written between 1999 and 2001. For Addicted to You, the singer flew to Minneapolis in the summer of 1999 to produce with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Time Limit came about with Rodney Jerkins. The rest of the record was made around the turn of the year, when the university was closed for a while.

The sound builds on R&B, with influences from hip hop, rock, reggae and techno. Wait & See is American R&B with funk and soul, Kettobase! is a fast pop-rock song and Parody has reggae touches. The title refers to the distances between people: in relationships, in dealings with one another and in feeling. AllMusic called Distance one of the most consistent and inventive albums in the body of work. The record topped the Oricon chart and broke the record for first-week sales.
