Mobley's Message
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Mobley's Message is an album by the tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, recorded on 20 July 1956 and released in 1957 on the Prestige label. He plays with the trumpeter Donald Byrd, the pianist Barry Harris, the bassist Doug Watkins and the drummer Art Taylor. On one piece the alto saxophonist Jackie McLean is a guest.
The repertoire combines work by others with original compositions. Bouncing with Bud comes from Bud Powell, 52nd Street Theme from Thelonious Monk, Au Privave from Charlie Parker and Little Girl Blue from Rodgers and Hart. Minor Disturbance and Alternating Current were written by the bandleader himself. Byrd does not play on Little Girl Blue, and McLean can be heard only on Au Privave.
