Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia · After earlier records that failed commercially, the band's budget shrank considerably. Guided by Voices' third album was therefore released at their own expense, in an edition of 500 copies. It was recorded at Steve Wilbur's home, on an eight-track recorder.
That limited recording technique produced something that would remain a hallmark of the group: a lo-fi sound. Many people therefore see this album as the first record with the band's true trademark. It is also the only album on which the drummer Bruce Smith plays. The fourteen pieces are mostly short. Dying to Try This lasts a little over a minute and Liar's Tale under two minutes, while An Earful o' Wax and Radio Show (Trust the Wizard) run longer.
