On the Double

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

On the Double · This fourth studio album by Golden Earrings was their first double album and came out in 1969 on Polydor. It was the last album under the name Golden Earrings and the last with the drummer Jaap Eggermont, who wanted to become a producer and later made Stars on 45. Fred Haayen produced the record.

The record has many styles side by side: psychedelic rock in Song of a Devil's Servant, baroque pop and orchestral ballads in Angelina and Just a Little Bit of Peace in My Heart, acoustic folk in Judy and Murdock 9-6182, and hard rock in Backbiting Baby. In November 2025 a remastered reissue appeared from the original master tapes, with the two stand-alone singles of that period as extras.

Listening

Listening tip. In Song of a Devil's Servant, listen to the band's psychedelic sound, the beginning of a long, varied record.
