I'm a Writer, Not a Fighter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

I'm a Writer, Not a Fighter · After 1972, when he was one of the most successful artists in the world, Gilbert O'Sullivan sought new directions on his third album. He recorded the record on and off in 1973 in the new studio of his manager and producer Gordon Mills, next to Mills's house. Mills played keyboards and sang backing vocals, and Johnnie Spence again made the string arrangements. O'Sullivan himself called it a very ad hoc project, made at home.

The music leans on rock and funk, with electric keyboards and under the influence of Stevie Wonder. Unlike earlier records, the album does not open with a short intro piece, but with the title song, which combines blues and soul. Get Down had been a number 1 in the United Kingdom months earlier. Ooh Baby did not make the British top 10. The album reached number 2 on the British albums chart. Critics were divided, but the verdict has become more favourable over time.
