Back to Front
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Back to Front is Gilbert O'Sullivan's second album and was released in October 1972 on MAM Records. It followed the debut Himself and the worldwide hit Alone Again (Naturally). The singer wrote the songs at home in nocturnal sessions and recorded them with Gordon Mills at Audio International Studios in London, again with the arranger Johnnie Spence. Mills had most of the vocals double-tracked. At the same time his image changed: the cap and short trousers gave way to a perm and sweaters with a G on them.
The record combines pop in the showbiz tradition with strings, but contains more piano songs than before. Clair is about babysitting Mills's daughter and became a number 1 in the United Kingdom. In But I'm Not you can hear the influence of Fats Domino. The album reached the top of the British chart and was well received by critics.
