Old Gold and Ivory
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Old Gold and Ivory is an album by the pianist George Shearing, accompanied by his quintet and a string orchestra conducted by Milt Raskin. The repertoire comes from classical music. Shearing plays, among others, Ritual Fire Dance by Manuel de Falla, a prelude by Chopin, the theme from Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, None But the Lonely Heart by Tchaikovsky and Pavane by Fauré. There are also pieces by Brahms, Grieg, Lecuona, Cyril Scott and Percy Grainger.
Shearing wrote the arrangements for strings, horns and woodwinds himself. The horn and woodwind players are not known. Reactions varied. Billboard wrote in April 1964 that the result was smooth, uncomplicated and creatively exciting. Scott Yanow of AllMusic found the performances well played and pleasant, but never rising above the level of sleepy background music.
