From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bossanova · Shearing Bossa Nova is an album by the British pianist George Shearing, who was born in London and had been an American citizen since 1956. He recorded it from 17 to 19 December 1962 for Capitol Records, on which it was released in 1963. Tom Morgan produced. Clare Fischer wrote the arrangements and conducted. Besides Shearing, you hear woodwinds and a Brazilian rhythm section.

The repertoire consists of bossa nova and jazz standards. Shearing plays Brazilian pieces such as One Note Samba, Desafinado and Manhã de Carnaval, but also On Green Dolphin Street and Come Rain or Come Shine. Samba da Borboleta and Pensativa are by Fischer. Shearing recorded for Capitol until 1969 and made more Latin records in those years, such as Latin Affair (1960) and Mood Latino (1961). AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars and named Samba da Borboleta and Pensativa as highlights.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Pensativa and notice how Shearing plays the melody on piano while Fischer's arrangement places woodwinds and a Brazilian rhythm around it.
