The Shearing Touch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Shearing Touch is a 1960 album by George Shearing's quintet with orchestra, arranged by Billy May. It contains twelve well-known pieces, such as Autumn Nocturne, Misty, Autumn Leaves, Honeysuckle Rose and One O'Clock Jump. Most last only two to three minutes.

The AllMusic reviewer pointed to unusual time signatures, to classical techniques and to the use of light pop melodies, accents and subtle rhythms. The pianist leads the quintet and May wrote the arrangements. The source tells us no more about how this album came about. The combination of a jazz quintet with orchestra gives the familiar songs a different colour from their usual versions.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Autumn Leaves and notice how the quintet and the orchestra together carry the familiar melody.
