In the Wee Small Hours · In the early 1950s, Frank Sinatra's career seemed to have passed its peak. After his comeback at Capitol and an Oscar for From Here to Eternity, he recorded this album in 1955, while his marriage to Ava Gardner was falling apart. Nelson Riddle wrote the arrangements and Voyle Gilmore produced. The sessions in Hollywood began at eight in the evening and ran past midnight. He chose the songs carefully and decided the running order himself.
The songs deal with melancholy, lost love and nightlife, which is why the album is sometimes called one of the first concept albums. Much of the accompaniment is sparse, without brass or strings. Dancing on the Ceiling and Glad to Be Unhappy were given a small jazz line-up, and Mood Indigo and Ill Wind are the most jazz-flavoured pieces. The record reached number two on the Billboard 200 and helped to make the 12-inch LP popular in pop music.
