Songs for Swingin’ Lovers!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Songs for Swingin’ Lovers! · After the sombre In the Wee Small Hours of 1955, Frank Sinatra chose a very different tone. His tenth studio album, and his fourth for Capitol, was released in March 1956 and, like the previous records, was arranged by Nelson Riddle. Existing pop standards sounded hipper and jazzier here, full of exuberance. A slow ballad, Memories of You, was recorded but left off because it did not suit an album of swinging, bright numbers.

It became the first record to top the new British albums chart, which appeared for the first time on 22 July 1956. In 2000 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Many fans rank it as his best or second-best album. The magazine Uncut later wrote that in its own day it was an answer to the rising tide of rock 'n' roll, with the rhythmic sound of Riddle's orchestra.

Listening

Listening tip. In I've Got You Under My Skin, listen to the rhythmic drive of the orchestra beneath the vocals, which makes an old standard suddenly sound thoroughly contemporary.
